Study Visa – Sweden

Hassle-free visa processing for your travel needs.

Overview

If you are a non-EU/EEA national and wish to pursue your education in Sweden, you will generally need a residence permit before entering the country. This permit allows you to stay in Sweden for the duration of your studies and, in many cases, bring your family members with you.

You can apply for a residence permit under various education-related categories depending on your level of study, programme type, or academic objective. The application must be submitted and approved before your arrival in Sweden.

Eligibility of Study Visas

  1. First- or Second-Cycle Studies
For applicants admitted to a Bachelor’s or Master’s programme at a recognised university, university college, higher vocational education institution, or folk high school in Sweden. You must be admitted to full-time studies and have paid any applicable tuition fees.
  2. Studies in a Mobility Programme
For applicants taking part in an EU or multilateral academic mobility programme that involves multiple EU countries, including Sweden. If your current residence permit does not cover your stay in Sweden, you must apply for a residence permit for first- or second-cycle studies.
  3. Doctoral Studies
For those admitted to full-time third-cycle (doctoral) studies in Sweden. Includes those pursuing a licentiate or doctoral degree or a qualification in the fine, applied, or performing arts.
  4. Contract or Specialisation Education
For those admitted to a contract education programme (under Ordinance 2002:760) or to a specialisation programme for doctors or dentists requiring a specific exemption under the Patient Safety Act.
  5. Other Studies and Exchange Studies at Upper Secondary School
For students admitted to studies outside of post-secondary education, including exchange programmes at the upper secondary school level. Full-time study and financial proof are required.
  6. Family Who Want to Apply Afterwards
For spouses, partners, or children under 18 who wish to join a student already in Sweden. The principal student must have a valid permit for first-/second-/third-cycle studies or for seeking work after study completion. The family must show proof of relationship and financial maintenance.
  7. Permanent Residence Permits for Doctoral Students
For doctoral students who have held a residence permit in Sweden for at least four of the past seven years. You must also be able to support yourself financially, plan to reside in Sweden, and live a well-behaved life.
