Live with Someone Visa – Sweden

Overview

This residence permit allows individuals to move to Sweden to live with a family member, partner, or relative, or based on other strong personal ties to the country. You can apply if you are:

  • A partner, child, or close relative of someone living in Sweden.
  • A family member of someone working or studying in Sweden.
  • A person with previous residence in Sweden or Swedish ancestry.

In most cases, you must apply from outside Sweden and hold a valid passport at the time of application.

Eligibility

To be eligible, you must meet specific requirements based on your relationship to the person in Sweden. These include legal relationship status, shared history, dependency, and whether the person in Sweden meets the maintenance and housing requirement.

Documents Required

Common Requirements (All Applicants)

Valid Passport

  • Submit a clear copy of your passport. It must be valid for the full duration of your intended stay.

Proof of Relationship

  • Marriage certificate, birth certificate, custody documentation, or other official proof depending on the type of relationship.

Proof of Accommodation

  • Refer to the Maintenance Requirement for the Person in Sweden section for details.

Proof of Finance

  • Refer to the Maintenance Requirement for the Person in Sweden section for income evidence needed from the sponsor.

Consent for Children (if applicable)

  • If a child has two legal guardians and only one is moving to Sweden, a signed letter of consent from the remaining guardian must be provided.

Translation of Documents

  • All documents must be in Swedish or English. Certified translations must accompany documents in other languages, along with the original.

Power of Attorney (if someone else applies on your behalf)

  • A signed power of attorney document must be included.

Additional Documents by Visa Type

Live with a Partner

  • Proof of relationship: Marriage certificate, registration of cohabitation, or documents showing shared residence
  • Proof that the relationship is ongoing (e.g., joint bills, tenancy agreements)
  • Pregnancy certificate if you are expecting a child together
  • If you have lived together abroad, provide tenancy agreements or official registrations showing this
  • If applying with children:
    • Birth certificates
    • Passports
    • Custody documents and consent (if applicable)

Maintenance Requirement: The sponsor in Sweden must be able to support both parties and provide adequate housing. See the dedicated section below.

Parents of Children Living in Sweden

  • Birth certificate showing the parent-child relationship
  • Proof that the child is under 18 and unmarried
  • Documents showing the child’s legal status in Sweden (citizenship or residence permit)
  • If applicable, custody documents and consent from the other parent/legal guardian
  • For unaccompanied minors: proof of asylum decision and date of residence permit issuance
  • If you have lived with the child previously: documents proving cohabitation and emotional dependency

Children Moving to Sweden

  • Child’s passport
  • Birth certificate showing parent-child relationship
  • Custody decision (if applicable)
  • Parental consent (if applicable)
  • Adoption papers (if adopted)
  • Proof that the parent in Sweden meets the maintenance requirement

Accompanying Family – Work Permit Holders

  • Copy of your passport
  • Proof of relationship: Marriage or cohabitation documents, birth certificates for children
  • Completed maintenance and housing questionnaire (to be filled by the person in Sweden)
  • Consent and custody documents for children, if applicable
  • Proof of dependency for children over 21 (if applicable)

Accompanying Family – Students

  • Copy of your passport
  • Proof of financial maintenance (e.g., bank statements)
  • Marriage or cohabitation documents
  • For children: birth certificates, custody documents, and financial evidence
  • A letter from the person in Sweden confirming you intend to live together

Other Family Members

  • Proof of relationship (e.g., family register, legal documentation)
  • Evidence that you and your relative lived together before they moved to Sweden
  • Documentation showing emotional and social dependence
  • Application must be made shortly after the relative moved to Sweden

Maintenance Requirement for the Person in Sweden

Most applicants must show that their sponsor in Sweden can support them financially and provide suitable housing.

Proof of Accommodation

If renting:

  • Rental contract with monthly rent, number of rooms, names, and signatures
  • Most recent rent invoice

If subletting:

  • Subletting approval from landlord or association
  • Valid subletting agreement

If owning a home:

  • Purchase or transfer document
  • Floor plan or housing specification (if number of rooms not shown)
  • Evidence of housing costs (e.g. heating, electricity, water, interest expenses)

Proof of Finance

If employed:

  • Employment contract stating position, salary, hours
  • Latest payslip

If on fixed-term contract:

  • Contract and 1–3 latest payslips
  • Previous contracts if the current one ends soon

If self-employed:

  • Final tax notice and income tax return (with NE/N3A form)
  • Preliminary tax assessment or 3-month tax account statement

If in a limited company:

  • Salary agreement and latest payslip
  • Tax account statement showing employer contributions (3 months)
  • Final tax documents and K10 form if receiving dividends

If unemployed but receiving benefits:

  • Decision letter from unemployment fund or Swedish Social Insurance Agency
  • Statement showing compensation period and amount

If retired:

  • Pension decision indicating monthly or annual amount

Photo Specifications

  • Full face, directly facing the camera, with a neutral expression and eyes clearly visible
  • Taken against a plain, light-coloured background (preferably white or light grey)
  • The image must be sharp, in focus, and not digitally altered
  • Head coverings are not permitted, except for religious reasons; in such cases, facial features must be fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, and from ear to ear
  • The photo must not contain any shadows, red-eye, or reflections
  • Glasses are permitted if they do not obstruct the eyes or cause glare; tinted or dark glasses are not acceptable unless medically required
  • The photo must not be more than 6 months old and must clearly resemble the applicant at the time of submission
  • Size should be approximately 35mm x 45mm (standard EU/Schengen size)
  • Only required for applicants under the age of 12, or for those who have not submitted biometrics for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months
