To qualify for a permit, applicants must meet criteria related to employment contracts, income thresholds, insurance coverage, housing conditions, and—where relevant—prior residence or legal status. Family members may also apply to accompany the principal applicant, provided maintenance requirements are met.

Documents Required

Common Documents for All Applicants

  • Correctly made copies of your passport
    Your permit validity cannot exceed the validity of your passport.
  • Employment contract or assignment agreement
    Must include job title, salary, working hours, employment duration, employer details, and signatures.
  • Proof of Insurance
    Your employer must provide documents showing health insurance, life insurance, industrial injury insurance, and occupational pension coverage.
  • Proof of Salary Level
    Must meet or exceed 80% of the current Swedish median salary published by Statistics Sweden (SCB).
  • Translate documents
    All documents must be in Swedish or English. Certified translations must accompany originals in another language.
  • Embassy selection
    Indicate which Swedish embassy or consulate-general you will visit for your interview.

Employed or Self-Employed

Employees

  • Must have a valid employment offer that meets wage and work condition standards.
  • Employer must initiate the application process.
  • Insurance coverage and financial maintenance requirements apply.
  • Cannot combine multiple part-time jobs to meet thresholds.

Self-Employed

  • Must provide a viable business plan.
  • Demonstrate prior experience and relevant credentials.
  • Show financial means to support self and family.
  • Submit business registration documents and bank statements.

Students Who Have Found Work

  • Must apply before their student permit expires.
  • Provide job contract meeting salary threshold.
  • Must have completed at least 30 credits or one term of postgraduate study in Sweden.

Family of Employees or Self-Employed Individuals

  • Spouses, partners, and unmarried children under 18 may apply.
  • Must show proof of relationship and family maintenance.
  • Attach rental contract or property documents to show housing arrangements.

EU Blue Card Holders

  • Must hold a valid Blue Card for highly skilled workers.
  • Provide job contract showing salary at least 1.5 times average gross salary.
  • Must have completed post-secondary education of at least three years.

ICT Permit Holders (Intra-corporate Transfer)

  • Must show transfer from a non-EU company branch to a Swedish branch.
  • Submit intra-corporate agreement, job description, and duration of stay.

Researchers

  • Must have been offered a research position with a Swedish institution.
  • Provide hosting agreement and documentation of research funding.

Athletes and Coaches

  • Submit contract with sports club in Sweden.
  • Demonstrate that the club meets organisational and financial capacity.

Artists

  • Contract or equivalent document showing duration, income, and artistic discipline.

Former Asylum Seekers with Employment

  • Must have held asylum status and subsequently found qualifying employment.
  • Employment must have started while asylum decision was still valid.

Seafarers

  • Must have a job offer with a shipping company operating in Sweden.
  • Submit maritime employment contract and seafarer’s documents.

Long-Term Residents in Another EU Country

  • Must hold long-term resident status in another EU country.
  • Provide documentation of EU residence and planned employment in Sweden.

 

Temporary Work in Sweden

Au Pairs

  • Must be 18–30 years old.
  • Submit an agreement covering working hours, tasks, pocket money, and accommodation.

Seasonal Workers

  • Provide employment contract for seasonal industries (e.g., agriculture, tourism).
  • Duration must be no longer than 90 days unless longer seasonal schemes apply.

Volunteer Work

  • Must have an invitation from an organisation with volunteer-based operations.
  • Submit contract detailing role, duration, support arrangements, and insurance.

Berry Pickers and Staffing Agencies

  • Submit contract with staffing company or farm.
  • Companies must be verified and meet financial/contractual standards.

Working Holiday Scheme (Youth Mobility)

  • Available for certain nationalities aged 18–30.
  • Provide financial proof, travel insurance, and return ticket or funds.

Traineeships/Internships

  • Agreement must be signed by Swedish host organisation.
  • Submit internship plan and proof of financial maintenance.

Temporary Work via Contracting

  • Must show contract between your foreign employer and a Swedish company.
  • Document project scope and your assignment role.

Self-employed with a Temporary Assignment

  • Show proof of service contract with a Swedish client.
  • Submit business documents and expected income proof.

Looking for Work

After Completing Studies

  • Must have completed higher education in Sweden (minimum 30 credits).
  • Apply for a 12-month residence permit to look for work or start a business.
  • Provide proof of completed studies and financial maintenance (SEK 4,297.50/month for adults).

After Completing Research

  • Researchers may apply to remain in Sweden for up to 12 months to find employment or start a business.
  • Must provide a certificate from the research host institution.

Job Seekers from Abroad

  • Available only to highly qualified professionals.
  • Show proof of higher education, professional experience, and financial support for your stay.

Additional Documents (As Applicable)

UK Residency

  • Provide a UK eVisa printout from UKVI with a valid share code.

Proof of Accommodation

  • Rental contract or property ownership documents.
  • Must indicate address, number of rooms, occupants, and duration.

Proof of Finance

  • Bank statements, employment contract, or sponsor documents.
  • Must show adequate income or savings to cover your stay.

Proof of Travel

  • Return ticket (if applicable) or travel itinerary.

For Accompanying Family Members

  • Marriage certificate or proof of relationship.
  • Birth certificates for children.
  • Custody decisions and consent letters if applicable.
  • Proof that the family member in Sweden meets maintenance and housing requirements.

Photo Specifications

  • Full face, directly facing the camera, with a neutral expression and eyes clearly visible
  • Taken against a plain, light-coloured background (preferably white or light grey)
  • The image must be sharp, in focus, and not digitally altered
  • Head coverings are not permitted, except for religious reasons; in such cases, facial features must be fully visible from the bottom of the chin to the top of the forehead, and from ear to ear
  • The photo must not contain any shadows, red-eye, or reflections
  • Glasses are permitted if they do not obstruct the eyes or cause glare; tinted or dark glasses are not acceptable unless medically required
  • The photo must not be more than 6 months old and must clearly resemble the applicant at the time of submission
  • Size should be approximately 35mm x 45mm (standard EU/Schengen size)
  • Only required for applicants under the age of 12, or for those who have not submitted biometrics for a Schengen visa in the last 59 months
